JENOLAN CAVES

This was a day tour from Sydney; I pre-booked it a couple of weeks before from the official website : https://www.jenolancaves.org.au/

How do you get here?

I took the Blue Mountains train to Katoomba. From there, I rented a GoGet car right at Katoomba Station. The drive to the Jenolan Caves took about 1.5 hours. Note that approximately 400 meters from the Jenolan Caves car park, vehicles are stopped and escorted due to the narrow, one-way road leading to the caves.

The good thing about this trip is the weather. Because the weather outside really doesn’t matter when you are inside the cave within the tour. The caves are always at a constant temperature of 15 °C or less, Having said that, expect frequent road closures en route to this cave due to frequent landslides and flooding.

Grand Tour

This was the name of the tour in general, and it combined two specific caves.  The orientation and the temple of Baal. Two of the most spectacular limestone caves. Our guide was a highly skilled, 72-year-old miner from Australia. Throughout the tour, he provided detailed explanations and illuminated the caves with focused lighting as we navigated through. He shared the history of the caves and described the chemical reactions that have occurred over the years. One notable section, the Temple of Bal cave, is steeped in Greek mythology. While some parts of the caves are not accessible, the website's description of the steepness primarily refers to the steps. These steps can be very steep, especially when descending, but they do not require the strenuous effort of a hard-rated hike.

Chifley Cave

Known for its colourful lighting, named after Ben Chifley, a former Australian Prime Minister, this cave offers a spectacular visual experience, including a fully guided tour for an hour. This is considered one of the easier caves to navigate, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. Inside these caves, you'll find a variety of formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and flowstones.

the first caves in the world to be lit by electric lights in 1880

Things you need to know

  • It’s simply a guided tour and you cannot go by yourself in any of the caves .

  • The temperature inside the cave remains cool year-round, so bring a light jacket or sweater. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for navigating the cave’s stairs and pathways.

  • There are also short bush walks around the caves and accommodations.

  • It is highly recommended to pack your lunch for the day, as there are few to no options in and around the cave.

  • Photography is allowed, but be mindful of other tour participants.

  • Ensure to have at least one hour break between two tours; ideal is one in the morning and one late afternoon .

  • A day before your trip, check the official website exclusively for any road closures and navigation updates.
